Hello friends! Today I am going to explain a very interesting horror supernatural film called "Don't Turn Out The Lights". At the beginning, you might feel like this is a typical movie where some friends are going somewhere and there will be a killer waiting for them. However, as the movie progresses, we witness supernatural, demonic events that will completely blow your mind.
Directed and written by Andy Fickman, this movie is quite engaging and fun to watch. It dives deep into real American Algonquian folklore surrounding the Wendigo. So, without any delay, let's jump straight into the story and unravel the mystery behind these terrifying events.
The Reunion and The Road Trip
The movie starts with Carrie, who has come to celebrate the birthday of her college friend, Olivia. While waiting for others, she meets her friend Gabby and Gabby’s boyfriend, Chris, who is always intoxicated. Soon, Olivia arrives, followed by another friend, Sophia, whose dad is quite rich. Carrie doesn’t really like Sophia because she was very toxic towards her in high school.
But for the sake of the reunion, they all try to enjoy themselves. Olivia announces that they are going to a club called "Blue Light". Since the club is far away, Olivia’s boyfriend, Michael, arrives with his uncle’s RV and his ex-marine roommate, Jason.
Everyone hops into the RV and heads towards Blue Light. On the way, they stop at a gas station for fuel and snacks. Here, things get a bit tense when two truck drivers start harassing Gabby and Sophia. Chris tries to help but fails miserably. Thankfully, Jason steps in and, being an ex-marine, beats them up.
The Wrong Turn
After the fight, they leave in the RV, praising Jason. Suddenly, a truck appears behind them, trying to ram them off the road. It seems to be the same truck drivers. The driver even starts shooting at them. To escape, Jason swerves the RV onto a different, secluded path. They stop to catch their breath.
Michael is worried his uncle will kill him because of the dent on the RV. Gabby mentions she knows a shortcut to Blue Light on this very road. As they continue driving, they lose cell service and eventually reach a mysterious diner at night.
Inside the diner, the locals are strange. When Michael and Carrie ask for directions, the owner sternly tells them to turn the RV around and go back to the highway. He refuses to say where the current road leads and scares them off with a gun. Despite this clear warning, Michael decides to keep going on the same dark road.
The Nightmare Begins
As they drive further, they hit something, but see nothing on the road. Michael goes out with a flashlight to check. He finds no animal or human, but suddenly, something invisible attacks him. Olivia watches in horror as Michael is killed instantly.
Jason goes out with a gun to find him but is dragged into the darkness by a demonic force. Now, only the girls and Chris (who is passed out) are left in the RV. Terrifying things start happening. Doors open on their own, and they see Jason covered in blood before he is snatched away again. They try to drive away, but the RV mysteriously stops and is pulled backwards to the exact same spot where they started.
They realize this isn't a prank. The entity attacks the RV again. Olivia vanishes while on a phone call, only to reappear in the distance. When she comes back running, the girls realize something is wrong, her reflection is missing in the mirror. It’s an illusion. The real Olivia is gone.
The Wendigo Legend
They deduce that they are dealing with a Wendigo, a Native American evil spirit. It mimics voices, shape-shifts, creates hallucinations, and fears light, hence the movie title. The Wendigo is a trickster that preys on their fear. Gabby, desperate for help, leaves the RV despite protests.
As soon as she steps out, she finds Olivia’s remains. The Wendigo had tricked them into thinking no one was there. Gabby goes into the woods for help and is never seen alive again. Sophia and Carrie seal the RV, lighting candles as the electronics fail. Suddenly, the TV turns on, showing live footage of Sophia, and Chris wakes up.
Chris thinks it's all a joke until the Wendigo attacks the RV again. He goes out to fix the engine and lights. The Wendigo plays tricks on him, hiding his tools. Eventually, Chris is stabbed by his own knife and then brutally pinned to the RV by a phantom car with antlers, sealing his fate.
The Tragic Ending Explained
Carrie and Sophia are the last ones standing. Paranoia sets in as they experience waking nightmares of stabbing each other. The RV starts filling with smoke, forcing them out.
Carrie tells Sophia to hold her hand, but when she looks back, Sophia is gone, another trick by the Wendigo. Carrie runs into the woods, finding Gabby’s severed leg. She runs for her life towards the highway, but just as she is about to escape the woods, she vanishes into thin air. The loop is complete; no one survived. Later, a new group of friends driving to Blue Light spots their abandoned RV, unaware of the doom that awaits them.
Post-Credit Scene Explained
In the post-credit scene, we see a man eating breakfast while listening to the same song Carrie heard on the radio. He places a photo of a demon or the Wendigo on his table. This man could be Michael’s uncle or perhaps one of the truck drivers. It is implied that he might have summoned or trapped the Wendigo in that RV or on that land.
When the friends trespassed, the creature was unleashed. The locals at the diner warned them because they knew that anyone who takes that road never returns. It’s a chilling reminder that some legends are very real.
